Questions & Answers
Everything you need to know about Hi! LACTOSA, lactose intolerance, orders and subscriptions.
Using Hi! LACTOSA
What is Hi! LACTOSA?
Hi! LACTOSA is a dietary supplement with 18,000 FCC of lactase enzyme in one thin, easy-to-carry caplet. It helps you enjoy dairy foods and drinks with more confidence. It is not a medicine and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
How does Hi! LACTOSA work?
Hi! LACTOSA contains lactase, the digestive enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose. When taken as directed with dairy, lactase helps break lactose down into simpler sugars (glucose and galactose) that your body can more easily absorb.
When should I take Hi! LACTOSA?
Take one thin caplet with your first bite or sip of food or drinks that contain lactose. The enzyme needs to be present while lactose is being consumed, which is why timing matters. Always follow the directions on the label.
How often should I take it?
Take Hi! LACTOSA whenever you consume foods or drinks that contain lactose. Individual needs vary depending on your level of lactose intolerance and how much lactose is in what you're eating. If you keep eating dairy for an extended period, follow the label directions on whether an additional caplet may be appropriate. Do not exceed the recommended use on the label.
Can I take Hi! LACTOSA every day?
Yes. Hi! LACTOSA is intended to be used every day, following the label directions, whenever you have foods or drinks that contain lactose. If you have questions about frequent or long-term use, speak with your doctor or another qualified healthcare professional.
How strong is 18,000 FCC?
Each caplet contains 18,000 FCC units of lactase, 6x the lactase of Lactaid® Original (3,000 FCC). That means one thin caplet instead of a handful of tablets.
What's inside? Is it vegan?
Each caplet contains lactase enzyme (200 mg, 18,000 FCC) and calcium (80 mg). Other ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate. Hi! LACTOSA is 100% vegan, sugar-free, gluten-free, fructose-free, histamine-free and non-GMO.
Does Hi! LACTOSA work for a milk allergy?
No. A milk allergy is an immune reaction to milk proteins, which is a different condition. Hi! LACTOSA should not be used to make dairy products safe for someone with a milk allergy. If you have or suspect a milk allergy, consult your healthcare professional.

Lactose Intolerance
What are the common signs and symptoms of lactose intolerance?
People with lactose intolerance may experience digestive symptoms after consuming foods or drinks containing lactose, such as bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, cramping and diarrhea. The type and severity vary from person to person and depend on how much lactose is consumed. If you regularly experience symptoms after dairy, consider talking to a healthcare professional.
What causes lactose intolerance? Is it genetic?
Lactose intolerance happens when the small intestine does not produce enough lactase, the enzyme that breaks down lactose. Babies usually produce plenty of lactase, but for many people production decreases with age. This is called lactase non-persistence, and genetics play an important role. Other conditions affecting the small intestine may also reduce lactase activity.
Which foods can contain lactose?
Lactose shows up in more foods than you might think, including:
- Milk (whole, skim and fortified)
- Cheese (fresh, cheddar, aged and spreadable)
- Yogurt, ice cream, sherbet and milkshakes
- Desserts like cakes, brownies and pies
- Processed meats (bacon, chorizo, sausages, pepperoni and salami)
- Coffee creamers (liquid or powder)
- Bread, sweet bread, waffles and pancakes
- Cereals and mashed potatoes
- Salad dressings and instant soups
- Italian food like pizza, Alfredo pasta, lasagna, ravioli and cannelloni
Note: some medications also contain lactose.
How do I know if my symptoms are caused by lactose intolerance?
Bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort and diarrhea can have many different causes, so symptoms alone can't always confirm lactose intolerance. If you suspect dairy may be causing your discomfort, speak with your doctor or another qualified healthcare professional.
How is lactose intolerance diagnosed?
A healthcare professional may recommend a hydrogen breath test, which measures hydrogen levels in your breath after consuming lactose. They may also suggest temporarily tracking your diet and symptoms. Always speak with a qualified healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis.
Why do some dairy products cause symptoms while others don't?
Everyone's tolerance is different, and the amount of lactose varies a lot between products. Some aged or hard cheeses contain relatively little lactose, while milk, ice cream, creamy sauces and some desserts contain much more. Serving size matters too. Tolerating some dairy doesn't necessarily mean you're not lactose intolerant.
What's the difference between a milk allergy and lactose intolerance?
A milk allergy involves the immune system reacting to proteins in milk. Lactose intolerance involves the digestive system and happens when the body doesn't produce enough lactase to digest lactose. Hi! LACTOSA is not intended to treat or prevent a milk allergy.
Can children be lactose intolerant?
Yes. Children can experience lactose intolerance, although causes and prevalence vary with age and other factors. If you suspect your child may be lactose intolerant, speak with your pediatrician before making significant dietary changes or giving dietary supplements.
Can lactose intolerance be treated?
Lactose intolerance is generally managed rather than cured. Options include limiting lactose, choosing lactose-free foods, picking dairy that is naturally lower in lactose, adjusting serving sizes and using a lactase enzyme supplement like Hi! LACTOSA when you eat foods with lactose.
Can I still enjoy dairy if I'm lactose intolerant?
For many people, yes. It's about finding the mix of food choices, serving sizes, lactose-free options and lactase supplementation that works for you. That might mean lactose-free milk at home and Hi! LACTOSA for pizza with friends, Alfredo at your favorite Italian restaurant, ice cream or a latte. Your digestion shouldn't decide your plans.
What should I do when eating out with friends or family?
At restaurants, parties and while traveling, it's hard to know how much lactose is in a meal. Dairy can hide in cream sauces, Caesar dressing, desserts, coffee drinks, baked goods and anything made with butter, milk, cream or cheese. Keep Hi! LACTOSA with you and take one caplet with your first bite or sip, following the label directions.
